Three Failed Internet Services

I must have been on a tear with coding a couple years ago. Three old domains for three experimental web services are expiring. One was to deliver email on a Kindle, another was a URL shortener, and the last was a OpenID service. Three duds in a row.

Compu-Wasted in LA

Takeaway points:

That 70s Computer: The People's Computer Company

The first computer book I read was "Teach Yourself Basic" by Bob Albrecht. It wasn't a really good book - at least not for a child - but there it was. Mr.

Cheap Android Tablets

While the mainstream is going ga-ga over the HTC EVO and the Samsung Galaxy Tab, there's been an explosion of Android-based mobile internet device (MID) tablets that cost less than $200. This is a weird situation, where cheap displays combined with ARM and Atom chips, and phone engineering skills combine to product low-performance alternatives to the iPad. Without a doubt, these cheap tablets sucks compared to the expensive iPad.

Review of Budget Headsets

Computer headsets - headphones with a microphone - are all the rage, because of Skype/VOIP and online videogaming. So, they cost way too much. This is an ad-hoc review of several brands.

WTF up with the lame Kontera links?

I thought contextual links would be interesting - at the very least they could be interesting to read. I actually like targeted ads, because they are like searches to me. I don't find them that annoying. But these ads from Kontera suck.

Fixing Broken LCD Monitors

I came across a broken LCD monitor on the street, and took it apart trying to figure out how to fix it.

AT&T DSL Modem + VOIP problems

We were trying to use VoIP with AT&T DSL and it wasn't working well. The problem turned out to be the DSL modems, believe it or not. Data throughput was high, but it was failing on calls.

Quick Reviews of Several DSL Modem / Routers

Why bother buying a DSL modem/router? Because the Motorola DSL modems AT&T gives out suck.

Sony Vegas: Importing DVDs and VOB Files

Until I started doing more video work, I ran under the assumption that DVDs were a good way to transfer video. DVD should use only three encodings: MPEG2 for video, and AC3 or MP3 for audio.

Review: Sly Electronics SL314CM

Wrote a review in July 2009. Now I barely use the thing, so I ended up taking it apart. It turned out that people were hacking a similar device, used for video games, for a while. It has a Sunplus SoC on it.

Intel Motherboards (mid 2010)

This is a short list of Intel motherboards. Intels are usually regarded as the most stable mobos, but lately stability has declined somewhat, according to reviewers at NewEgg. You need to match the memory to the board to achieve stability. Look up lists of compatible, tested RAM.
